Appearance and Environment

Each year we fund a series of projects designed to help the town look and feel better.

The BID are the sole funders of all town centre Christmas decorations and lights along with additional tree lighting along Lord Street and other areas. We also provide award winning floral displays year round and our Ambassadors ensure all grot spots are reported and tackled.

Christmas lights

We are the sole funders of all town centre Christmas lighting scheme and the town centre Christmas Tree. With thousands of individual lights installed across the town centre, it is one of our single biggest projects. Features have included a 40 foot fully lit Christmas tree in Town Hall Gardens and an additional one in Ocean Plaza. We have installed over 400 light installations including those on the Atkinson, Lord Street roundabouts and the Eastbank Gateway roundabout and they are extended into new streets each year.

The lights are switched on each year with our big November switch on event!

Streets have included: Eastbank Street, Wesley Street, Union Street, Bold Street, Seabank Road, Hill Street, Hoghton Street, Chapel Street, Nevill Street, London Road, Ocean Plaza, Tulketh Street. Princes Street.

Lord Street tree lights

BID levy payer money funded the Lord Street tree lights, lit all year round. This stunning installation creates a ‘boulevard of light’ which enhances the street for night time visitors and help make it a warmer, friendlier place to be.

The lights are now extended to Chapel Street and maintained year round. Each year for our Halloween festival the lights glow orange as a great feature

Over quarter of a million lights along Lord Street

We have also funded light installations along Wesley Street and Cambridge Arcade.

In 2017 we introduced our two BID Ambassadors. The Ambassadors work across the town centre, acting as a friendly face to greet visitors and sign post them to what they need. They are a vital link between businesses, the BID team and the public. They share offers and news from BID businesses and assist vistors to ensure their stay is maximised and pleasant.

The Ambassadors also play a vital role in reporting issues such as fly tipping, graffiti and vandalism.  Using their digital app they can instantly send any cleansing or environment issues directly to the council teams and the BID office.  They are linked into DISC and the radio network and regularly liaise with security teams for shops.

  • Over 300 Fly tipping reports
  • 1,500 Business visits
  • 2,400 Newsletters hand delivered
  • 400 Graffiti or vandalism reports submitted

Adding colour and flowers

Each summer we install eye catching displays of flowers throughout the town centre. The displays have helped Southport to receive an award during Britain in Bloom 2016 and bring colour and pride to the town.  Over 20 large displays are installed alongside 200 barrier baskets, hanging baskets and more.

The barrier baskets remain throughout the winter season with fresh displays to keep the colour all year round. We provide vital funding to the Lord Street Volunteers for flowers and equipment to keep the gardens looking spectacular.

Furthermore, we have installed 65 colourful promotional banners along several streets and deep cleaned over 30,000 square meters of pavement.
