Meeting our independents!

Over the last couple of weeks Helen has met lots of independent business owners and finding out a little more about them and what they do.

Enduring success: Mackay Brothers, Eastbank Street

First up was Mackay Brothers, an enduring success on Eastbank Street. Mackay’s specialise in bespoke joinery- doors, gates, kitchens, staircases, fitted wardrobes, shelving, flooring and loft ladders. Started by brothers Bob and Dave Mackay in November 2004, Dave has over 35 years’ experience in the joinery/carpentry business and Bob has over 20 years’ experience in management/sales. They are a family firm with Dave’s son Lewis now an important part of the company,  They hope that Lewis will be the future of the company and maintain the good reputation that has been built over the last 12 years.

New kids on the block

Retro Culture, Wayfarer’s Arcade

Helen also visited the brand new Retro Culture in Wayfarers Arcade.  Set in the smallest unit in the arcade, it is a tardis of a shop packed with colour popping modern Vintage clothing.  Owner Mel Pickup is an artist and loves Vintage clothing.  Mel originally had a successful online business but really wanted to open up a high street shop. She opened Retro Culture the end of October last year and she has new Disney modern Vintage clothing arriving soon!

Eat With Purpose, Tulketh Street

Max met new health food cafe owner Rob Beresford. ‘Eat With Purpose’ opened last month on Tulketh Street.  Rob is a Southport local and has lived here all his life. He decided to open up his cafe as it’s the only one of it’s kind in Southport and he is very passionate about helping Southport town centre.  Rob’s passion is health and fitness so he has opened his shop to share his passion and help people eat healthier.  It’s his first business venture. All of the ingredients are sourced locally and all food is made fresh on the premises.

RA Bar, Lord Street

Helen also met the owners of the lovely new Ra Southport  on Lord Street.  After opening just before Christmas, owner Fadi Thomas had run a bar in Egypt previously for 13 years. He is very excited about this new establishment and he will be serving an Egyptian Mezzah menu from early May.
