[fusion_text]Thousands turned out on one of the hottest days of the year to sample some of the hottest food around as Southport played host to the town’s first ever Chilli Festival.
Organised by Chilli Fest UK with support for Southport BID, the event added yet another successful Festival to the town’s ever expanding calendar of attractions.
Around 15 stall holders from around the UK (some coming from as far away as Devon and London) took over Town Hall Gardens on Saturday selling everything from chilli chocolate to chilli cheese including dips and sauces inspired by the Naga Viper pepper – one of the hottest chilli peppers ever measured.
All washed down with lashing of chilli-infused gin and ginger beer.
Hugh Evans: Our inaugural Chilli Festival lived up to its expectations with the crowds, the weather, and of course, the excellent products on sale all exceeded our expectations.
“The highlight was the Clash of the Titans chilli eating contest where ten very brave souls battled it out to see who could eat the hottest chilli. It was eventually won by Jay Minty from Wigan on a very hot tie break. He’s already pledged to be back here next year to see if he can defend his crown!
“We’ve already got a number of ideas to make next year’s event even bigger and better “[/fusion_text]
